Passionate about running and our coastlines, Alex Asher combined his love of both at the start of this year in January. Over a five week period he ran from Wellington around the entire West Coast of the North Island to Cape Reinga. Alex covered 1227km, the equivalent of 29 marathons, in support of the charity ‘Sustainable Coastlines’.
While familiar with adversity, having run the entire East Coast six years earlier, Alex still struggled to overcome difficult injuries, severe weather and his greatest fears by swimming all the major rivers and harbours on his path including the Wanganui, Manukau and Hokianga. Most notably, he became the first person to swim our largest harbour, the Kaipara, and finished his epic journey with a 100km overnight mission from Ahipara to Cape Reinga.
